Fortunately, we weren’t starting from scratch. I’d already built a Recognition System for Hurst Farm's heritage trail previously, so there was an established visual language we could build from to move quickly without compromising the quality or consistency of the work. The trail itself was already complete and the boards needed to do was uncover the story behind it. Especially the people, heritage, skills and years of work behind the trail. The result is a set of visitor boards that balance scale, narrative and practical information, while making the wider evolution of the trail much easier to understand. Project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Derbyshire Dales District Council and Platform Housing Group. A good design system isn’t only about consistency. It gives you capacity when you suddenly need it.
